Hi, My Name Is...

Yesterday, a new blogger pal of mine named katdish posted something that caught my eye and captured my heart.

It was a guest post by another new blogger pal of mine named Kelly Langner Sauer

(ya...I make friends that easy.
Not!!
I'm telling y'all...one word...blog-hoppin'!!!)

The post was about names.

More specifically, it was about the power of names.

In greater detail, the power of His name.

...and it got me to wondering...

What does my name mean?

My real given name is Sabine and it means...well, it doesn't really mean anything other than a group of Romans from way back when.

...deflated...
for a moment.

BUT...then I searched my nickname...

I looked up "Bina" and what I found made me sit back and stare.

It is Hebrew in origin...and its meaning is "knowledge and/or insight".

Wow! Really???

And while nothing more than a group of Romans was listed under the search of my first name,
the information under the meaning of "Bina" showed that it is a variant form of "Sabina"...
which is a variant form of "Sabine"...
which is more than just a group of people or the name of a river in Texas.
(At least it wasn't a river in Egypt!!)

Now, I don't mean to sit here and say that I thought I had no meaning in life until I found out that my name had a "real definition",

...but, to be quite frank, for a moment there...

...when "Sabine" held no promise of a definition...

....I did a bit let down...disheartened even.

And in that simple internet search...

in that moment when the nickname given to me years ago showed to have the same meaning as the one bestowed upon me by my parents...

Well, I felt the sweet whisper from God's heart to mine...

I felt a renewed urge to get up and follow the One who named me with purpose...

I remembered that while my name has meaning,

His holds power...

...and I am His.

Kelly put it so well in her post:

His name is Jesus. Immanuel. "God with us."

"What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.

Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died — more than that, who was raised to life — is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

As it is written:

'For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.'

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

- Romans 8:31-39

I hope you will take the time to jump over to katdish's place at Hey look, a chicken because Kelly gives much more insight to this thought processes...and I am thankful to them both for this post as it stirred up the passion within my heart and soul...and reminded me to get up and get moving for Him.

On a side note...I would love to hear from you:
What does your name mean???

Looking up as always...

I thought the same thing about my name Diane after Diana, the goddess of wine. So, I'm like great I'm known for getting people drunk, but then a friend of mine said that the Holy Spirit sends down new wine to His people and I thought wow...... Me, sending refreshing, something new to God's people.... A new perspective and a "new" name was given to me that day. :O)

I have tried to look up my name before and never got anything- until tonight! It means "of noble birth" which after looking at the definition of noble (because it isn't our social class!) it is of moral character. So, I think I'll take it.

I had hopped over to the chicken blog yesterday- good stuff!!(refraining from saying its "finger lickin' good!)

Okay, first of all thanks so much for the shout out here! I loved Kelly's story so much. I just looked up my name, Katherine - it means "pure". Hmmm...no comment.

Wonder what katdish means?

Thanks again. And very nice to "meet" you Bina!

I think Wendy originated from Peter Pan and I believe it means fair (as in coloring, not ruling sense).

Bina, insight...I like.

I love God's names--all of them!

words could never express how much i needed this today....God is so good!
My name, the way it is spelled means "princess"..who me? But Sarah means "mother of nations" which I love~!

(p.s. in reference to Diane above, that is exactly what her friendship is to me..refreshment and encouragement. She more than lives up to her name.)

Great thoughts. I have always liked my first name - Nancy meaning graceful. But until a few years ago did not really like my middle name. Then a friend pushed me to learn what it meant. My middle name is Darlene and it means beloved. At that point in my walk with God it was a name he had been calling me. Then to learn that my earthly father gave me that name for the very reason of its meaning. And to know that our name is also important to him. It always blows my mind how good God is!

Thanks for your words of encouragement this week - it has meant a lot!

beautiful post.

isn't it wonderful when God tells you who you are.

i've read that my name means,
"wise discerner."
but it comes from dionysius- the god of grapes and wine. blah.

my maiden name is teodosio, which comes from theodosius.

"theo" means God, and "dosis" means giving. meaning "God giving" or "Giver of God"

i want to be a God Giver to my family and those i come in contact with.
